Update: Wallace’s early confusion is understandable in context: the issue at first wasn’t a theory so much as ‘how the blazes could evolution happen at all?’ and the evidence of the fact of evolution was the first struggle as the now obvious became clear: species arise and evolve into new ones over time, not at first obvious. The idea of natural selection is at first a placeholder as Wallace having graspe the facts of evolution posits natural selection (which is a multiple pun in English) confuses the struggle of survival. The real mechanism of evolution is way beyond science so far.
