Where once physics, as with Marx, suggested strongly a view of the universe, one based on Newtonian physics, and the universal causality of nature, the new worlds of quantum field and string theory seem to end in a question mark, as the issues of consciousness, free will, the soul, and the nature of society end in question marks.
