Two things stand in the way of socialism, capitalism and Marx’s pseudo-science…// Review of John Bellamy Foster’s “The Return of Nature…

Two things stand in the way of socialism, one is capitalism, and the other is marxist pseudo-science. That there is a connection between Marx and ecology could hardly be otherwise, if you look hard enough, but this gesture to annex ecology to Marx will have a destructive effect on ecological socialists who need to rethink the basis for a socialist transition without Marx’ theological canon or his broken theories. Marx may have a connection to ecology but his theories are junk science and it might help to keep ecology away from Marx’s confusions. The basis of ecology is, in part, the Romantic movement as a counterpoint to the Enlightenment. Why not create a left that is based in the full scale of modernity, including the Enlightenment and the ecological vision of the Romantic movement? Why put everything into the Marx meatgrinder to satisfy Marx’s domination neurosis that forced a cult of his name to worship at his altar.
Leave ecologists alone and let’s create a post marxist socialism (able to learn from marxism) and starting over to recast the subject for our century.
