Pinker’s malignant delusions…??COVID-19: Atheism Went Viral As Well

The new atheists have spoiled atheism, and in the process created a whole new set of superstitions. But this essay is a bit demented itself. Espousing religion for its benefits is indeed delusive on the part of social programmers who may be crypto-atheist. It is the alternatives offered that is wrong here, along with suspicions about its facts.

The issue of the soul is a permanent muddle either way. It is entirely different from the question of atheism, another muddle next to that of theism. The philosopher Kant warned of the double whammy of critiquing metaphysics only to end up in another, e.g. the metaphysics of scientism and the fanatic idiocy of secular humanists. The question of the afterlife is hardly a malignant delusion: the only problem is that its metaphysical basis is lacking referent, however the same is true of its negation. But that doesn’t mean it is wrong. The christian views on the subject are definitely delusive but the more general question of a ‘metalife’ and/or ‘afterlife’ won’t go away. The Tibetan Book of the Dead composed by men who meditated for centuries and ‘life after life’ gives testimony to an entirely strange yet hardly delusive view of the afterlife, or the between life. There is no reason a more intelligent ‘secular humanism’ can’t be tolerant to views of, say, reincarnation, or in any case embark on a quest to deal with the question from scratch…

Belief in the afterlife is a malignant delusion, since it devalues actual lives and discourages action that would make them longer, safer and happier. Exhibit A: What’s really behind Republicans wanting a swift reopening? Evangelicals.
