We expect capitalism to be the creator or our future but a closer analysis shows that it is blocking our real future. Left to itself it will reduce the potentiality for social transformation on the way to an unforeseen future. It can hardly do otherwise given its voracious and dominating character.
We often get into a state of mind, mostly induced by propaganda, that capitalism is the way things are,
the ‘there is no alternative’ syndrome. But the prescience of the greater left since the nineteenth century has warned us to consider otherwise, the unobvious reality is that capitalism is in reality a marginal yet domineering state of social affairs. And now in the era of climate calamity we see the reality, and just how right the critics were. Capitalism has become a global menace and threatens civilization itself. And it does so on its own terms yet also in the way its ideological aspect comes to dominate thinking. The victims, as we see, cannot fathom the simple issue of climate change and the implicit belief in the benign powers of capitalism to deal with that, to the extent it enters awareness at all, goes without challenge in the mass delusion of a closed belief system.
