Shakespeare, eonic effects, and the tragic genre…

Tolstoy’s unreasonable criticism might as well be leveled at War and Peace as a glorified soap opera: shakespeare at least was able to resuscitate the tragic drama, the long lost genre unseen since the Greeks. His crudities are almost eloquent…the undoubted class basis in his plays is itself misleading: his kings are torn to pieces and it is no accident he precedes the democratic age: after shakespeare’s ‘blank verse guillotine’ the mystique of kingship was in ‘tragic finale mode’..(one of the mysteries of world history is the rarity of the tragic genre, and its appearance in two eonic transitions…)
